Arab Dementia Research

About

Arabs are not represented in dementia research. Our community council is working to change that. Without research that focuses on our community, we won’t be able to develop effective programs, treatments, and policies to support us.

We are working together to build connections, raise awareness, and learn about experiences of dementia in our community. We are trying to understand:

  1. How does dementia impact our community and what kind of support do we need?
  2. How can we create dementia-focused research that represents and includes us?

Our studies

Our community council is partnering with academics in San Antonio to conduct two foundational studies. Collecting data will help us answer our research questions, but more importantly, will chart a path for us to take action.

Since Winter 2024, we have collected surveys and conducted focus groups among Arabs in our region. Updates on our project and study findings will be added to this page periodically.

In addition to our research, we are working with local organizations to adapt existing and create new services to support the Arab community.
