South Texas, a predominantly Latino community, is home to the most counties with the highest prevalence of dementia in the United States. Unfortunately, there are few or no supportive services accessible to individuals and families impacted by dementia in most South Texas communities.

Research is critical to the development of effective programs, services, and policies. Despite having higher risk for dementia, Latino communities are largely excluded from dementia research, limiting our ability to support their unique needs and experiences.

Our goal is to support the people of South Texas to participate in and lead community-centered research.

Steering Council

Our Steering Council includes persons living with dementia, family caregivers, community health workers, community organizations, and researchers across South Texas. We have been working with research partners to study what matters most to those impacted by dementia.

Community Platicás

We have been hosting pláticas with communities impacted by dementia in South Texas to discuss experiences with dementia and how research can address the issues that matter to us. These gatherings connect people with shared experiences and shape research priorities and more inclusive research strategies.

Follow Our Work

We developed a brief report of recommendations to share back with our community and any organizations or institutions aiming to improve how they care for South Texas families impacted by dementia.
